Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

I love when things go right. You know? Like when you do well on that test you studied so hard for? Or even better – you change your hair colour and get a happy surprise when you look in the mirror. I love that. Seriously. Sometimes I want to take my hair stylist out for a fancy dinner and shower her in gifts.

These cookies went right into my mouth. Not only are they totally cute, but they crackled perfectly while baking AND had the chewiest, fudgiest, center! A total success and a new favorite cookie of mine.

So, add these to your holiday baking list! Because you like it when things go right too. I can feel it.

Let’s begin, shall we? In a medium bowl, mix together cocoa, white sugar, and vegetable oil.

Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.

Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt and stir it into the cocoa mixture. Cover dough, and chill for at least 4 hours. Waiting is stupid…but necessary.

Roll dough into one inch balls with lightly oiled palms (you can use a cookie scoop to portion the dough, a tablespoon or a rounded teaspoon depending on what size you like).

Coat each ball in confectioners’ sugar before placing onto prepared cookie sheets.

Ok, now that’s just pretty…

Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Let stand on the cookie sheet for a minute before transferring to wire racks to cool. Enjoy everyone!

  2. I’ve never been able to make a successful crinkle cookie–the confectioners’ sugar always melts in to the cookie within a few minutes of baking, and the cookie comes out dry. Guess I’ll have to trust you and try these out!

  3. they are perfect and beautiful and I’ll take a dozen, please! :)

  4. Yumm… crinkle cookies are making their way across the blogosphere these days! Makes sense with Christmas ahead. :) Your cookies look delicious.

  5. I was thinking about these cookies… my mom loves making this. Thank you for sharing them and have a nice weekend.

  6. These are my husband’s most favorite cookies! It’s the one thing he requests over and over and over again. I haven’t tried this particular recipe, I’ll have to do that soon :)

  7. Rolling that delicious looking dough could be dangerous. For me, rolling usually ends up become more like snacking. Eat, roll, eat, roll…

  8. I LOVE crinkle cookies. I made red velvet crinkle cookies last night, but I wish they had turned out as white as these are – for some reason most of the powdered sugar sunk into the dough, I guess. Good job! They’re beautiful and look tasty.

  9. These look adorable and so delicious!

  10. Oh wow I’m definitely making these before Christmas! I’m going to use all whole wheat, olive oil and way less sugar and see how they come out. I’ll let you know!

  11. I heart chocolate crinkle cookies. Yours look beautiful! I need to make some asap for my cookie trays!

  12. actorsdiet says:

i keep seeing these cookies everywhere (on blogs, unfortunately, not in real life – then i could eat them….)

  13. There’s nothing better than a chocolate cookie. Except maybe a crinkly powdered sugar dusted one :)

  14. Powdered sugar makes everything a little better :) The cookies look awesome and I love your blog too!
    Take care..

  15. YUMMY! I made these as written (but with 1 1/2 cups sugar) as Christmas presents for a few people and they’re so very amazing! Something I quite like about this recipe is that it’s really cheap to make, which is nice when giving them out to tons of people. I ate so many just now I feel like I’m going to get sick. I’ll try the version I mentioned above on Friday. :)

  16. Beautiful little crackled cookies! Happy belated birthday!

  17. Thank you for the inspiration Katrina! We used to make similar cookies in Germany but love your recipe even more. Cheers:)

  18. Picture perfect cookies!! Merry Christmas!! xoxo

  19. I was so excited to learn this icing sugar trick recently – makes for beautiful cookies!!

  20. This is such a classic cookie and I don’t know why I haven’t made them before. I have all the ingredients so I am putting them in my long todo list.

  21. They look really delicious.Merry Christmas.

  22. I have a few words of advice for those thinking of making these cookies:

    1) Stay calm. Don’t run to your kitchen and start madly throwing ingredients into a bowl just to get the desired product sooner. They’re worth the wait. I promise.
    2) That being said, THESE ARE SO GOOD AND YOU NEED TO MAKE THEM NOW!
    3) The dough is incredibly thick and way too delicious. You can make up for this by hand mixing it–you’ll burn some calories from all the dough you just ate, and you won’t need to worry about breaking your hand mixer!
    4) Above all else, do NOT skip the refrigeration step. Seriously, just…don’t do that.

  23. Beautiful! My aunt makes a huge variety of cookies for Christmas day every year, and this is one of them. They look just like the cookies in your photos… if they taste anything like them, I’m sure they are delicious!

    Happy Holidays!

  24. Mmmm, can I pretend like I still need to do some holiday baking? :)

  25. I think I made these three times using the original recipe (except I used 1 1/2 cup sugar)! People loved them. I gave the dough to several baking lazy people so that they could have fresh cookies for Christmas. I made them for myself making them whole grain, using unrefined sugar and olive oil and they really tasted just the same. Thanks a ton! I’ll definitely post about them at some point. :)

  26. These are a favourite in my family – I’ve been making them for years!! Martha (THE Martha, only one name required) also adds instant coffee to hers…. I’ve tried and it’s an incredible twist.

  27. made them with one cup of sugar
    mmmmmm
    soooo good
